Anthony Herrera Car Accident: Tragic Collision Claims Life of 21-Year-Old Wauconda Man on Route 12 near Fox Lake

In a heartbreaking incident, Anthony Herrera, a 21-year-old resident of Wauconda, Illinois, lost his life in a fatal car crash that occurred on Route 12 near Fox Lake. The accident transpired on Thursday evening and involved a head-on collision with a wrong-way driver. The Lake County Coroner, Jennifer Banek, confirmed that the cause of death was blunt force trauma sustained in the collision.

Emergency services, including the Fox Lake Fire Protection District and the Fox Lake Police Department, were alerted at approximately 9:40 p.m. The crash took place between Routes 59 and 134. Preliminary investigations by the Fox Lake Police Department suggest that a black Cadillac SRX was traveling in the wrong direction, southbound on Route 12’s northbound lanes. Fox Lake Police Chief Dawn DeServi reported that the Cadillac collided head-on with a Ford work van driven by Herrera.

Upon their arrival, firefighters discovered both drivers still trapped inside their vehicles. Immediate efforts were initiated to free them from the wreckage. Herrera was found to be non-responsive at the scene. Both drivers were transported to Advocate Condell Medical Centre in Libertyville. Herrera succumbed to his life-threatening injuries shortly after arrival. The 48-year-old Cadillac driver suffered from multiple lacerations and possible fractures but is currently in stable condition.

An intensive investigation is ongoing, spearheaded by the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT), who were called to assist the Fox Lake Police Department. Several other agencies, including the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the Lake Villa Police Department, and the Round Lake Police Departments, provided additional support at the scene, focusing on road closures and managing traffic. Route 12 was reopened to regular traffic around 2:00 a.m., as per Chief DeServi.
