Brian Gonzalez, a devoted 30-year-old father and husband, and Leishani Gonzalez, a passionate 23-year-old recent graduate from Illinois State University and budding producer at WEEK-TV, faced an untimely demise in a devastating accident on I-74, just east of Goodfield.
The initial collision occurred around 1:24 a.m. near milepost 116 in Woodford County when a Toyota sedan and a Mercury SUV collided. The aftermath of the collision was overwhelming, with both vehicles blocking traffic lanes. In a likely state of shock, both Brian and Leishani, occupants of the Toyota, made the decision to exit the vehicle and stand in the roadway. In a tragic turn of events, a Chevrolet sedan, unable to stop in time, collided with the Toyota and subsequently struck both Brian and Leishani.
Tragically, the impact claimed their lives instantly. On the other hand, the Chevrolet’s driver was rushed to a nearby hospital, having sustained injuries that were fortunately non-life-threatening.
Illinois State Police were prompt to respond, managing the accident’s aftermath and spearheading the subsequent investigation. The severity of the accident called for a road closure until 8:15 a.m., allowing the authorities to carry out a comprehensive investigation and ensuring safety for other road users.
