Upon being alerted about a collision around 4:45 p.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies promptly reached the 29000 block of Gilmer Road in Fremont Township, part of Mundelein, IL. There, amidst the chaos, they found a heavily damaged 2019 Ford Expedition. Early indications from the inquiry suggest the elderly Mundelein driver of the Ford lost control of the vehicle. The car subsequently crashed into a tree, which resulted in a blazing fire engulfing the vehicle.

Compounding the tragedy, a 36-year-old passenger from Grayslake, Illinois, was ejected from the vehicle during the impact. While the driver’s life was sadly lost at the scene, the ejected passenger was initially rushed to Advocate Condell Medical Centre in Libertyville due to the severity of his injuries. Later, he was moved to the burn unit at Loyola University Medical Centre in Maywood, with his current condition being described as critical.

Additionally, two Chicagoan men, aged 37 and 36, who were also in the car, experienced the horror firsthand. Despite sustaining severe injuries, they fortunately managed to escape the flaming vehicle. Both men were subsequently transported to nearby medical facilities to receive the urgent care they needed. The Lake County Coroner’s Office will be conducting an autopsy on the deceased driver to further understand the circumstances leading to his unfortunate demise.

As of now, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Crash Investigations Team is spearheading the inquiry into this tragic incident. Many questions remain, with one of the most pressing being the underlying cause that led the driver to lose control of his vehicle.
