Walter Montgomery Obituary
In memory of Walter Montgomery: Christ School’s unwavering supporter and distinguished philanthropist, who departed this life at the age of 93.
On the quiet morning of Wednesday, October 4, 2023, Walter Scott Montgomery, Jr. drew his last breath at the warmth of his home, surrounded by the love of his family. Walter’s 93 years were filled with purpose and love: as a cherished husband, a guiding father to four, and a doting grandfather to fourteen.
Born on December 28, 1929, Walter’s early years were set in the charming town of Spartanburg, South Carolina, to proud parents Rose Bailey Cornelson and Walter Scott Montgomery, Sr. As a testament to his legacy, Christ School proudly wrote, “Walter Montgomery, Jr. ’47, P’93, P’96, P’98, GP’24, GP’25 was not just an alumnus, but a relentless advocate of Christ School. Beyond the school’s gates, he was a luminary in the Upstate South Carolina business scene and was celebrated throughout the Carolinas for his unparalleled generosity and tireless volunteer work.”
To honor his remarkable life, a memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 8th at 4 p.m., at The Episcopal Church of the Advent in Spartanburg, S.C. Walter, alongside his beloved wife Betty, held an unwavering love for Christ School, a torch that has been passed down across generations. Their legacy is felt by every Greenie, especially with Walter’s impactful service on the Board of Trustees at Christ School, spanning an impressive five decades.
